The Resurgence of the Bow Tie

GQ China Dec 2009 "Monaco Elegance"

When a guy pulls off a bow tie, it's incredibly attractive. Thus, it makes me very happy that there's been a resurrection among young men of the bow tie, popularized by celebrities, Chuck Bass, and notable fashionistos. Charles Henry, owner of Fine and Dandy shop, said last August that he is "wild about bow ties" and "I love to make them formal and wear them to an opening, etc., but I also love to wear them with a pair of jeans when going out."

However, to the men who either have never experimented with bow ties or are thinking about bringing them back into their wardrobe, wearing the gentlemanly accessory can be tricky. Below is an instructional and informative video on the history of bow ties and how to tie them, as well as three bow ties that are simply sensational.

The sparkles in this Thomas Pink bow tie are subtle, and require a man either very confident in his masculinity or very confident in his fierceness to wear it. Chuck Bass wore a sparkly sequin jacket that impressed me greatly; this Swarovski bow tie similarly wows, but is definitely a more subtle statement of manly glitz than the attention-grabbing blazer.

For sophisticated menswear, Brooks Brothers is a great place to go. Their bow tie is simple but distinguished; burgundy and navy are colors that exude power and class, and are perfect hues for work. Pair with a classic navy suit to be the sartorialist of the office!

If you want to be the most stylish guy around town this Spring and Summer, wearing an orange bow tie will be sure to give you the title. Orange is a huge trend for men this upcoming season, so this chic yet playful Fine and Dandy bow tie is perfect to wear with a navy blazer and slim-fit jeans -- you'll be making a statement that you are a confident, stylish gentleman!

These three picks for night wear, office wear, and day wear should get you started on your path to pull of the bow tie with grace and confidence while looking effortlessly fashionable and handsome. If you want more options, check out Fine and Dandy's Spring Lookbook to see many other trendy and classy bow ties (as well as other great looks for a fashionisto of any age). If you feel particularly daring, match your bow tie with your socks!

Bowtie would truly come back one day if people start to wear them in business setting instead of tie in mass again. In the mean time it's still more of a playful statement sort of thing.

Though, I certainly don't mind more choice, who knows maybe one day everyone will wear ascot tie in the winter or something...

I adore the sparkling bow tie. Would not say no to wearing that. And that jacket that Chuck Bass wore - WOW! How did I miss that!?

Amy -- So true! I'm glad my boyfriend dons a bow tie now and then.

Anonymous -- You can see all sorts of magazine scans if you are a member of the Fashion Spot; its members share images from all over the world which is great, since so many foreign mags offer such interesting and inspirational perspectives on fashion!

JAFS -- Isn't the jacket fabulous? Only reason #9823 why I love Chuck Bass' style :)

Mens Ties -- You're very welcome :)

Bob Hynes -- I love that look! I think wearing a button down oxford, jeans, and some penny loafers with bow ties makes for an excellent casual outfit.
